Rekey or replace?

Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing lock so it works with a new key and every old key stops working. It's a sensible step when you move in, lose a set of keys or part ways with a roommate or contractor. Replacing the lock makes more sense when it's worn, damaged, or you want a stronger deadbolt or a high-security cylinder that resists picking and unauthorized key copies.

Not sure which you need? Describe your doors on the phone and we'll talk you through it.

Locks for DC homes

Many Washington rowhouses still have original mortise locks, and many condo buildings use their own hardware standards for unit doors. We'll look at what's on your door before recommending a change, and if your building has rules about locks, check with management before we install anything new.

Before the technician arrives

  • Have photo ID ready, ideally with the property address.
  • Tell us how many doors and locks are involved so we bring the right hardware.
  • If you rent, check whether your lease needs landlord approval for a lock change.

Residential locksmith questions

Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving in?

If the locks work well and you like them, rekeying is usually the cheaper choice: we change the pins inside so old keys stop working. Replacement makes sense when a lock is worn, damaged or you want a higher-security model.

Can you match all my doors to one key?

Often, yes. If your locks share the same keyway, we can rekey them to one key. If they don't, we'll explain your options before doing any work.

Can you help if I'm locked out of my apartment?

Yes, for your own unit's door. Building main entrances are usually controlled by management, so you may need them for the lobby. Have ID ready showing the address.
